Lake Tamblingan sits in the highlands of North Bali, around 1,000 metres above sea level, near the village of Munduk. It is one of the most protected rainforest areas in Bali — motorboats have never been allowed on the lake, there are no large resorts on its shores, and no tourist buses stop here. What you will find is dense tropical forest, ancient temples hidden among the trees, and a calm lake that reflects the sky like a mirror on still mornings.

Your day begins with a private pickup from your hotel. We arrive at your lobby in an air-conditioned car — no need to arrange transport, no navigating Bali’s roads on your own.

As the car climbs into the Munduk highlands, you will notice the air changing — cooler, fresher, carrying the smell of earth and wet leaves. This is not the Bali you see in most travel photos.

At the forest entrance, your guide — a local ranger who grew up in this forest — will greet your group, introduce themselves, and walk you through what the day holds. You will receive your hiking stick, mineral water, and a short briefing on the trail.

The first step into the forest feels immediately different. The canopy closes above you — large trees with buttress roots, epiphytes hanging from branches, and the living sounds of the jungle surrounding you on all sides.

Yes. We adjust the pace entirely to your group. If you want more time at a particular temple, a longer rest at the lake, or a slower walk through the forest, your guide will accommodate that. This is a private tour — there is no rushing to meet a larger group's schedule.

What happens if it rains?

The trek runs in light rain — the forest actually feels more alive and atmospheric when it is wet. We will inform you if conditions are genuinely unsuitable. A light rain jacket is recommended as a precaution, particularly during the wet season (November to March).

Is this suitable for families with young children?

Absolutely. The trail is safe and manageable for children from around 4 years old. Families are one of our most common guest groups. Our guides are patient and experienced with children. Kids under 12 receive a discounted rate of US$44 per person.

Can I request a vegetarian lunch?

Yes. Let us know when booking — vegetarian, vegan, or any food allergies — and we will arrange lunch accordingly at no extra charge.

What is the best departure time?

A hotel pickup at 6:00–6:30 AM is ideal. This ensures you arrive at Tamblingan while the morning mist is still over the lake — the most beautiful and photogenic conditions. The earlier you arrive, the more the forest feels like it belongs only to you.

What is the minimum group size to book?

The minimum booking is 2 people. Solo travelers are welcome — message us on WhatsApp and we will try to match you with another small group available on your date.

Is the canoe ride safe?

Yes. Motorboats are permanently banned on Lake Tamblingan, which means the water is always calm. The traditional wooden canoes are wide, stable, and operated by experienced local boatmen. Life jackets are available on request, particularly for families with young children.
