Ever wondered exactly what a full day of Tamblingan Jungle trekking feels like — from start to finish? This guide answers that question hour by hour, from the moment we pick you up at your hotel to the moment you arrive back with a full stomach and memories that will last a long time.
We have welcomed hundreds of first-time visitors to experience the beauty of Tamblingan Rainforest Trekking, and the most common question we receive before departure is always the same: “What exactly will happen, and when?“
Here is your complete Tamblingan trekking itinerary — from the hotel pickup through dense jungle trails, a traditional canoe crossing on a sacred lake, visits to ancient temples hidden among the trees, and a traditional Indonesian lunch to close the day.
About Tamblingan
Lake Tamblingan sits in the highlands of North Bali, around 1,000 metres above sea level, near the village of Munduk. It is one of the most protected rainforest areas in Bali — motorboats have never been allowed on the lake, there are no large resorts on its shores, and no tourist buses stop here. What you will find is dense tropical forest, ancient temples hidden among the trees, and a calm lake that reflects the sky like a mirror on still mornings.
Complete Itinerary: Hour by Hour
- 6 : 30 AM
1. Hotel Pickup
Your day begins with a private pickup from your hotel. We arrive at your lobby in an air-conditioned car — no need to arrange transport, no navigating Bali’s roads on your own.
Estimated travel time to Tamblingan:
- From Ubud: 2 – 2.5 hours
- From Seminyak / Canggu / Kuta: 2.5 – 3 hours
- From Nusa Dua / Jimbaran: 2.5 – 3 hours
- From Kintamani: 1.5 hours
Use the drive to rest, watch the landscape shift from coast to cool highlands, or chat with your driver about local life in Bali.
- 8:30 – 9:00 AM
2. Arrival at the Tamblingan Forest Entrance
As the car climbs into the Munduk highlands, you will notice the air changing — cooler, fresher, carrying the smell of earth and wet leaves. This is not the Bali you see in most travel photos.
At the forest entrance, your guide — a local ranger who grew up in this forest — will greet your group, introduce themselves, and walk you through what the day holds. You will receive your hiking stick, mineral water, and a short briefing on the trail.
- 9:00 AM
3. The Trek Begins — Into the Rainforest
The first step into the forest feels immediately different. The canopy closes above you — large trees with buttress roots, epiphytes hanging from branches, and the living sounds of the jungle surrounding you on all sides.
Your guide leads at a relaxed pace, pointing out plants, birds, and insects along the way and sharing stories about the forest. These are not scripted tour facts — this is a person who genuinely grew up here.
What you may see along the trail:
- Massive tropical trees with dramatic buttress roots
- Wild orchids growing directly from tree trunks
- Giant ferns and moss-covered ancient stones
- Long-tailed macaques watching from the canopy above
- Rare birds found only in Bali’s highland forests
The path is shaded, mostly flat, and peaceful. Your guide always sets the pace to match your group.
- 9:30 AM
4. Ancient Temples Hidden in the Forest
Along the jungle path, you will stop at several ancient temples tucked deep into the forest. These are not tourist replicas — they are active sacred spaces still used by the Tamblingan community for prayer and ceremony.
Pura Dalem Tamblingan
Pura Pande
Pura Gubug
Temple etiquette: Your guide will give you full instructions on the day. As a general note, dress modestly and speak quietly in temple areas. Sarongs are available if needed.
- 10:15 AM
5. Traditional Canoe Crossing on Lake Tamblingan
After the forest walk and temple visits, the trail opens out to the edge of Lake Tamblingan. The first view of the lake from the forest edge is a moment that stops most visitors in their tracks.
Here you will step into a jukung — a hand-carved traditional wooden canoe made by local craftsmen. No motors, no noise. Just the sound of the paddle meeting the water and the quiet of the lake around you.
- On calm mornings, the lake surface is mirror-still, perfectly reflecting the surrounding forest and sky
- Morning mist hanging over the water creates an atmosphere that is deeply photogenic
- Your guide shares the history of the lake and why this ecosystem has been so carefully preserved
Canoe duration: approximately 20–30 minutes
Photo tip: This is the single best moment for photography during the whole experience. Ask your guide or boatman to take photos from different angles — the results are usually extraordinary.
- 11:00 AM
6. Rest Stop — Coffee, Tea & Fresh Air
After the canoe crossing, your group stops at a scenic rest point overlooking the lake and forest. Here you will enjoy freshly brewed Balinese coffee or local tea alongside light snacks — all included in your package.
No rush, no schedule pressure. This is one of the moments guests mention most often when they look back on the day — sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, watching the forest, with nowhere else to be.
- 11:30 AM
7. Return Walk Through a waterfall
Your guide leads you back through the adventure with a waterfall visit in Munduk
- 12:00 – 12:30 PM
8. Local Lunch in a Traditional Joglo with Munduk
After the trek, it is time to eat. You will be taken to a Traditional Joglo restaurant serving a traditional Indonesian lunch — rice with an authentic spread of Balinese dishes. Everything is included in your package, with no additional charges.
Typical lunch menu includes: steamed white rice with Cap cay or fried Rice, crackers , mineral water
Dietary preferences? Let us know when booking — vegetarian, vegan, or specific allergies — and we will make sure your lunch is prepared accordingly
- 1:00 – 1:30 PM
9. Return Transfer to Your Hotel
After lunch, your driver is ready to take you back. The return journey passes through quiet North Balinese villages, clove and coffee plantations, and green rice terraces carved into the hillside.
Estimated return arrival:
- Ubud: approximately 3:30 – 4:00 PM
- Seminyak / Kuta / Canggu: approximately 4:00 – 4:30 PM
- Nusa Dua / Jimbaran: approximately 4:00 – 4:30 PM
Your afternoon and evening remain completely free to enjoy the rest of what Bali has to offer.

Ready to Experience Tamblingan?
Tamblingan jungle trekking is not a famous attraction. It does not appear on every Bali “top 10” list. It does not have a queue at 4 AM or a busy car park at the trailhead. And that is exactly the point.
It is the kind of experience that reminds you why you came to Bali — to feel something real. To walk somewhere genuinely wild. To sit in a wooden canoe on a sacred lake and have absolutely nowhere else to be.
We are a local Bali family team based in the Tamblingan area. Our guides are not agency staff — they grew up in this forest. When you trek with us, you get real stories, genuine local knowledge, and an experience that no large tour operator can replicate.

EXCELLENT Based on 206 reviews Posted on Google Misty ProctorTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Had the most magical and beautiful experience trekking through the jungle with my amazing guide Putu, followed by canoe ride across Lake Tamblingan. Putu was an intern and I was his first Australian tourist and he just made the whole experience amazing, explained to me all about the jungle. The rain at the end of the canoe ride just made the experience even more magical. Definately recommend this trek, not too challenging either other than a few muddy slippery spots due to the rain.Posted on Google Josef BenesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Posted on Google Anne NoëlTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing jungle trekking with amazing guides. Our guida Koman (hope i got that right) was amazing, super kind and super knowledgeable. We learned a lot about the jungle and local legends and the kanooing was also a lot of fun!Posted on Google Gede Patera yogaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Posted on Google Ricardo González GarcíaTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. El bali selvático escondido y oculto...una maravilla... imperdible.Posted on Google Sven BoeckxTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Korte wandeltocht door de jungle. Je krijgt uitleg over verschillende planten. Nadien kanotocht over het meer. Op het meer was weinig te zien.Posted on Google Sumaiya RahmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent medium length hike through the rainforest with our wonderful and very knowledgeable guide Gede, finishing with a canoe trip over Lake Tamblingan. Jungle floor a bit slippy especially after the rain, good shoes and sure-footedness helps. I had neither so I brought back some mud and leeches.
